HALL OF FAME

Here are some of the species we have caught which are of particular interest or noteworthy, i.e firsts for the county or rare in North Wales etc. To some it may not look like much, indeed some of these species are common in other parts of the UK, but it is about context, some of these species either are actually rare in the area, newly colonising it or just vastly under-recorded. Either way when you find one in the moth trap it certainly gets you excited!

Eastern Black Tabby

Diplopseustis perieresalis

Found in the house on the 20th April 2020 by Lauren, after a few days it was identified as this species and is a new species to Wales.

Sycamore

Acronicta aceris

A single moth of this species turned up in our moth trap on the 26th June 2020, the first time in Flitnshire this moth had been recorded.

Orange-spotted Shoot Moth

Rhyacionia pinicolana

Recorded on the 19th July 2017 in the garden and was the first time this species had been recorded in Flintshire.

Smoky-barred Marble

Lobesia abscisana

Not common in North Wales, our record on 6th July 2017 was the first one in almost 20 years. There are only 14 records in North Wales.

Small Ranunculus

Hecatera dysodea

A chance find on 19th July 2020 on the spare bedroom window during the day, a new species to North Wales.

Hawthorn Moth

Scythropia crataegella

Recorded on the 16th May 2017 in the garden and was the first time this species had been recorded in Flintshire. (Recorded subsequently too)

Large Beech Piercer

Cydia fagiglandana

Recorded on the 6th July 2017 in the garden and was the first time this species had been recorded in Flintshire.

Leopard Moth

Zeuzera pyrina

A moth we have had on a number of occasions, yet on 21st June 2017 the it was the 2nd Flintshire record & first time recorded in over 20 years.

Scarlet Tiger

Callimorpha dominula

On the 25th June 2020, 2 of these stunning moths were in our garden, making them the first time this species has been recorded in Flintshire.

Yellow-backed Clothes Moth

Monopis obviella

this little moth appeared in our garden on the 31st May 2018 and was the first record for Flintshire, with only 3 other records for North Wales.

Fenland Pearl

Anania perlucidalis

Recorded on the 25th May 2017 in the garden and it is only the 2nd record for North Wales and 1st for Flintshire.

Two-coloured Bell

Eucosma obumbratan

Found 2 on the 1st July 2018 at Connah's Quay, it was the first time since 1971 that this species had been recorded in North Wales.

Hemlock Yellow Conch

Aethes beatricella

Recorded on the 9th June 2018 in the garden, it was the first ever record for North Wales, and the first for mainland Wales.

Burdock Conch

Aethes rubigana

Recorded on the 6th July 2017 in the garden and it is the first record of this species in Flintshire, although probably overlooked.

Obscure Wainscot

Leucania obsoleta

Also recorded on the 25th May 2017 in the garden, it is only the 4th record for North Wales and the 1st for Flintshire.
