Our First Rarity of 2021

2021 has officially begun now we have had our first rare fungal find of the year, the wonderful Leucoagaricus americanus, a species with no current English name.

Lauren brought this specimen home from work where one of her colleagues had found it growing on woodchip in a hot house on the 12th January. It is a distinctive species which turns yellow when damaged and then slowly orange-red.

At the time of writing there are only 10 records of the species in the UK, and none in Cheshire which is where it was found. It may perhaps be an overlooked species as I can not find it in any of my field guides, the only reference source are website from American mycologists.

We have now added an identification page for this species on our website, click here to see it for your self.
